It is almost time to start out on our trip, but first we needed to prepare. In order to get ready we put trash bags in our packs so our gear will stay dry. We also got all of the food ready to go and put in our packs. We gathered up the canooes and the life jackets and we are now ready to go. Now we just need to get some sleep so we will be ready in the morning to get started on our adventure.
The Hawk Mountain Conservation Corps (HMCC) will undertake an expedition of the "Kittatinny Wild" region. The Corps will be utilizing the Lehigh River just North of the historic village of Jim Thorpe, navigating down river to the Lehigh Gap, then taking on foot and trekking back to Hawk Mountain Sanctuary utilizing the famous Appalachain Trail. Join this dynamic team of explorers by following our adventure and discoveries.

It's Go Time.
Rendezvous at Common Room. Tarp shelters prepared. Food divided up. Gear checked. Last preparations made. It's Go Time. HMCC Everglade preparation trip begins.
"Tomorrow we should wake up around 6:30...A.M," says Todd. David's eyes widen to the size of pancakes (Airport Diner style). Tomorrow the core will be traveling to Glen Onoko, a part of Lehigh Gorge State Park. Then we will launch our canoes and begin our 10 mile downriver expedition. After hopefully seeing wildlife and great sites (and hopefully having no accidents) we will cache the canoes near Lehigh Gap Nature Center and continue the trip on foot. The plan is to trek 28 miles on the Appalachian Trail back to Hawk Mountain Sanctuary. But when do things ever go exactly to plan...
It's time to go
In order to prepare for the trek, the corp gathered at hawk mountain. Our preparation included getting tarps ready, picking up the canoes, dividing out food, and of course water-proofing our packs with garbage bags and dry sacs. Along with the seriousness of our preparation we decided to scare the delaware valley group by hiding in the woods. Following that we headed up to the Visitor's Center to get the blog set up. I'de say we are ready to go.
Getting Ready!
Expedition team arrived and preparation is almost done. The Schaumboch's /Common Room was a happening place. The Delaware Nature Society is camping at the shelters after their week of experiencing the mountain. Corps group couldn't help themselves so they had to do a hide in the dark forest-jump and scare- thing. Lots of screaming!!!! Followed by much laughter. Then some introductions by lantern light.
This collection of youth, on the mountain, what a special place!!

Preparation
We are here at Hawk Mountain the night before our trip and we are getting all of our packs and gear in order for tomorrow's departure. We packed light so when we cache our canoes we can travel fast through the last 28 miles that will be done on foot. While we are on the water most of our items will be wet so in order to protect our stuff we double lined our packs with trashbags in order to waterproof it. Early tomorrow morning we will get on the water at Glen Onoko(Lehigh Gorge State Park) and finish the day at Lehigh Gap Nature Center.
